1. Carnuntum and Hainburg an der Donau

It is located 42 km southeast of Vienna.

The development of the carnuntum Archaeological complex and the rise of the Donau-Auen national park turned this once-forgotten region into a significant destination for travellers.

Other sights are Haydn’s birthplace, Schlossberg castle ruins and Schloss Rohrau.

Guided tours in English are available in July and August, otherwise, they are in German only.

2. Marchegg

It is located 52 km northeast of Vienna.

This tiny corner of the lower wienviertel is known as the marchfield known as the granary of Austria, the region is home to a baroque elephant castle known as the Schlosshof.

3. Neusiedl am see

it is located 50 km southeast of Vienna.

At the north end of the lake, it is named a pleasant resort town with good facilities.

You can visit the ruins of the 13th-century hill fortress, ruined Tabor and the 15th-century parish church near the town hall. The plains around Neusiedl lake are perfect for leisurely bicycling.

4. Rust

it is located 71 km southeast of Vienna.

Picturesque rust, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site is easily the most famous village on the lake for the colourful facades of its houses and for the lake sports.

5. Baden

It is located 38 km southwest of Vienna.

The Wein Strasse brings you to the Serenely elegant spa town of Baden. Baden’s sulphuric thermal baths have attracted both the ailing and the fashionable from worldwide.

Other places to visit are the Arnulf Rainer Museum, Beethoven Haus, Kurpark Baden and the ornate casino House.

6. Korneuburg

It is located 12 km northwest of Vienna.

Just across the river on the north/east (Krems) bank lies Korneuburg. The town is best known for its spectacular castle which lies a short walk from the centre.

Other places to visit are Burg Kreuenstein (Castle cross-stone) and the Stift Klosterneuburg Abbey

7. Krems

It is located 80 km northwest of Vienna.

Krems marks the beginning of the Wachau section of the Danube. Set at the centre of a thriving wine-producing area, charming Krems is perhaps the most famous for its cobbled streets which have not changed since the 18th century.

Other places to visit are the steinertor city gate, the renaissance-style Rathaus, The state gallery of Lower Austria and the 13th-century piarist church.

8. Melk

It is located 86 km west of Vienna.

One of the most impressive sights in all of Austria, the abbey of Melk is best approached in mid to late afternoon when the setting sun ignites the abbey’s ornate Baroque yellow facade.

Other places to visit include The Melk abbey which is part palace, part monastery and part opera set.

There are guided tours in English every day at 3 pm.

9. Durnstein

It is located 85 km northwest of Vienna.

Durnstein is the most beautiful town along the Wachau Danube as you will see when you arrive along with droves of Tourists.

The main street Hauptstrasse is lined with Picturesque 16th-century residences.

Other places to visit are the Stiftskirche and the Richard Lionheart Castle (Ruine Durnstein)

10. Eisenstadt

It is located 58 km south of Vienna. Burgenland provincial capital Eisenstadt is a tiny town.

Although the town existed since at least the 12th century it only rose to significance in the 17th century when it became the seat of the Esterházys a princely Hungarian family that traces its root to Attila the Hun.

Other places to see include Haydn’s little garden house, the Austrian Jewish Museum, Esterházy Palace and an assortment of churches.

There are so many reasons to visit these towns from the Magnificent splendour of Melk abbey to the Picturesque stretch of the Wachau valley.
