5 Things to look out for

  1. The Late Romanesque Giant door.

This magnificent feature is notable for its unique ornamental symbol of Dragons, birds, lions, monks, and demons and was named after the Mastodon bone found during its construction in 1443.

3. A hidden message

There is a hidden message carved into a stone outside the Cathedral’s front door. The letter “o” and the number “5”. The “5” represents the 5th alphabet which is “E” when combined it becomes “OE” which is an abbreviation for Osterreich meaning Austria.

4. Home to a record-breaking bell

Also, worth seeing is the Cathedral’s 68.3 m tall North tower, here hangs the 2nd largest free-swinging “pummerin” bell rung only on special occasions

5. The catacombs and Cathedral Treasures

Stephansdom has two towers (North and South) that you can climb and get to see the view of the city.

The catacombs are only accessible through a guided tour, the passageway extends from the Cathedral all the way to Stephanplatz and includes the bones of over 11,000 Viennese stacked up in tiers(this part is not open to the public)

The Cathedral treasure is located in the West Gallery.

If you are on a budget you can visit the front nave and the northern side for free!

There are several small altars where you can pray on pews, light a candle and pick up a souvenir from the cathedral shop.
