11-th Century Orthodox Church and museum.
St Volodymyr’s Church is a cathedral in the centre of Kyiv, built between 1862 and 1896. The colourful interior of the cathedral is particularly striking. Its mosaics were completed by masters from Venice. The frescoes invented under the guidance of Professor Adrian Prakhov by a group of famous painters.
The religious wall painting and architecture of St Volodymyr’s are visual attractions of this church. The aesthetic qualities are enhanced by the fact that the relics of two saints lie in the cathedral. St. Varvara was a Greek girl martyred in the early 4th century, and St Makariy was a fifteenth-century Ukrainian Metropolitan.
Huge murals, flecked with golden accents, include a painting of Volodymyr the Great’s baptism into Orthodox Christianity in Chersonesus. Spiritual leaders of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchy continue to conduct religious services and prayers in St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral.
All the ceremonies are organized in Ukrainian, accompanied during religious holidays by the Cathedral choir, which is often joined by opera singers.
Its architecture, its religious art, its sanctity gives the worshipper and casual visitor alike an emotional and devotional uplift.
