President Volodymyr Zelensky chose today as the “unity day” for what he hoped would be a patriotic outpouring after US reports suggested Russian forces could attack Ukraine on Feb. 16.
Today at 10:00 the National Flag was hoisted on houses and buildings, and the National Anthem was played in all settlements of Ukraine.
There were hopes for a breakthrough as President Vladimir Putin met Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz to explore a route to a negotiated solution and Moscow said it had begun to pull back some forces.
After meeting Scholz in Moscow, Putin said Russia “of course” did not want war, and was willing to look for solutions with the West.
“We are ready to work further together. We are ready to go down the negotiations track,” Putin told a joint press conference with Scholz.
“Together we mark the Day of Unity! Unity of a great people of great Ukraine! This day is ours. Of those who live on the right and left banks of the Dnieper. In cities and villages. Near the Carpathians and spoil tips. On the coast of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Who speaks Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar, Russian, Hungarian or sign language, and together – create Ukraine not in words but in deeds!”
President Volodymyr Zelensky.
We wish Ukraine a happy unity day celebration!
The tension in the country’s atmosphere has dissipated thanks to the support of other European countries who came to Ukraine’s rescue.
Glory to Ukraine!
