Vienna Transport and Accommodation

Date

Vienna has one of the best organized public transport and accommodation in Europe. It is cheaper to use public transport than a car because of the high cost of parking fees.

Airport, Trains, and Taxis

  1. Vienna airport is not so big and not packed compared to Germany or Paris. You can easily find your way out into the city.
    • Train

This is by far the best option. It is also the cheapest, most efficient and comfortable. There are regular trains between the airport and the central train station (Wien Hbf). The cost of the train is EUR 4.20. Most of these trains are further continuing their ride to other cities.

We have the S-Bahn (schnell Bahn), CAT (City airport train) and the ICE.

When you go out of the hall after the luggage belts turn right, you will see the signs for the trains. Check the OBB website for more information on train schedules.

  • Bus

there are also bus options to get to the city centre from the airport. To be honest, trains are always better and a faster alternative.

The buses of Vienna Airport Lines take you directly to Vienna city centre, to the Donauzentrum via Vienna International Centre (VIC), or to Vienna’s Westbahnhof.

Vienna city Transport: Bus

Tickets cost €8.00 (adults) and can be purchased from the driver.

  • Taxi

Taxis in Vienna are expensive. The company “Airport Driver” have a stand at the airport. They offer a ride at a fixed rate from the airport. The prices vary, but the lowest price is €25.00.

Better still you can order an Uber or bolt which is cheaper than the ones you will find at the airport.

Public transport

As we mentioned earlier the public transportation in Vienna is fast and efficient, and you can reach every place in Vienna. There are subways, trams, and buses.

Ticket price and validation

Tickets cost EUR 2.40, and you can buy them from the red ticket machine in the stations or inside the vehicle.

The Red ticket machine

You have to validate your ticket before entering the subway or within the tram/bus.

NOTE: At the time of writing, FFP2-standard face masks are required when using public transport and inside all municipal transport buildings, including stations.

Vienna works on an honesty system with no ticket barriers at stations and no formal, permanent ticket checks on the subway, local trains, trams, and buses.

You just hop on and off unquestioned, but there are occasional ticket checks, and you can be fined heavily if you do not have a ticket. So buy a Ticket!

A good alternative to buying a single ticket is to buy a 24,48,72-hour, weekly or monthly ticket as they are much cheaper.

  • City Bikes

City Bikes is a nationwide bike sharing facility that you will find in both small and large cities

You can rent bikes online or from rental shops in Vienna. You take a bike from one place and leave it at any other station you find on your way.

Bike-friendly mobility policies and continuous expansion of the cycle route network have done much to encourage this enthusiasm for cycling

Now that you know how to get around the city the next thing is to find where to stay.

There are a few things to put into consideration when choosing your accommodation in Vienna.

  • Districts

Vienna is divided into 22 districts. Only the 21st and 22nd districts are located on the other side of the Danube.

The trendiest among the locals are the 1st, 4th,5th,8th and 9th districts.

In general, there are no unsafe places to avoid in Vienna, it is a safe city, and you can walk at night.

Getting a place to live in the 1st district is expensive because it’s a bit touristy.

We recommend you stay around the central train station, you have good access to the airport, and there are many hotels/hostel options to pick from.

There is a shopping mall at Wien Hbf with a lot of shops and dining options. Some shops are open till 23:00 this is a good thing because in Vienna shops close at 18:00.

We hope that we helped you a bit with planning your trip to Vienna. We have more tips about what to see and do in Vienna.
